Middleton
East Winch Road postmill |
Middleton East Winch Road post windmill originally stood at Mill_Farm and was moved to the East Winch Road site at some point from the 1840s onwards, probably by the Matthews family. Although a bake office was mentioned in adverts it's unclear whether this was the original one at Mill Farm or a new one at the East Winch Road site. The mill had a roundhouse and powered 2 pairs of 4ft. stones and a jumper. |

SITUATIONS WANTED To Master Millers Wanted by a young man aged 20, a situation as Second Miller or Under Stoneman. Has had four years experience. Good references. Address, Fk. C. Bardell, Middleton near Lynn. Lynn Advertiser - 19th November 1887 & 17th March 1888 |
After James Howes died the mill was run by his executors, Walter J. Howes and John Bardell. It was probably John Bardell's son Frederick, who had been working at the mill for some four years before advertising for a position elsewhere after the mill ceased working in 1886. |
One of two post mills at Mill Farm was moved to the East Winch Road site, at the top of the hill, where the land was under the same ownership - Matthews. John Bardell, Ivy Farm - 31st March 1974 |
It would appear that wind power was supplemented by steam power c.1858 and the steam mill carried on running until c.1896. |
Howes were bakers at Ivy Farm before building the Steam Mill which is now the Antique Shop. (But did they have the post mill before Mr. Bardell's knowledge?) (Yes. See Lynn Advertiser 12 Nov 1881). His father William Bardell was apprentice boy at Drew's_Mill. His cousin, now 99, is Mr. Warren who owned Watlington mill and had it taken down. Harry Apling - 1974 |
