Surlingham towermill stood to the south of the village. The 4 storey mill used patent sails to power 3 pairs of French burr stones, Auxiliary power was supplied by a small steam engine.

Robert Crake, apprenticed to Thomas Gent was the son of Thomas Gent's sister, Mary.


Jeremiah Chapman was born in Surlingham in 1791. He married Elizabeth Rawlin in 1813. He was emplyed as a miller at Surlingham by at least 1814, before moving to Claxton to take over the running of Claxton smockmill.

SURLINGHAM
Messrs. Hunter have received instructions from the Trustee of the Will of the late Robert Crake to Sell by Auction at the Bell Hotel, Norwich on Saturday August 3, 1872 at 3 for 4 o'c.
Lot 3. A substantially erected Brick TOWER WINDMILL with four Floors, Patent Sails, three pairs of French Stones and capital Machinery. Also Mill Yard upon which are erected a MILLER's COTTAGE, FLOUR HOUSE, and GRANARY with piece of Garden Ground adjoining containing altogether 1r. 1p. in the occupation of Mr. John Diggens.
